Guest Blogger ~ Erica Zambanini

Erica

First of all I want to say thanks to my good friend Lori for giving up some of her blog space for this post.  I know all of you come here to see her beautiful photos, but she asked me to share my story here so that we can help raise funds for a great organization – The March of Dimes.

My name is Erica Zambanini, and I am the mother of a stillborn baby.  I’m not sharing my story to scare you, but to make you aware of how important the March of Dimes is to so many tiny babies and their families. My first son, Logan, was stillborn at 28 weeks on this past Thanksgiving day. I can say that the days leading up to Thanksgiving were the worst few days of my life, and I know that my husband would agree. But at the same time, I would never go back and erase those days of being pregnant with Logan, and holding him in my arms for the short time that we had with him.  I never had the chance to look Logan in the eyes and tell him how much I love him, I never got to hear him cry and try to figure out how to make him smile, but I am a mom and for the first time I truly understand that statement, “You don’t know what love is until you hold your baby in your arms”.

Since losing Logan I have learned that 1 in 115 babies is stillborn in the United States. And in many cases, like ours, there is no medical reason that can explain it.  I wasn’t high risk, Logan had no developmental problems, and I had a perfectly normal pregnancy up until the day that his heart stopped beating. Although the March of Dimes doesn’t focus specifically on stillbirth, any research that leads to healthier pregnancies and a decrease in prematurity and infant mortality can only help get us closer to preventing this type of tragedy.  Prematurity is even more common than stillbirth, and thanks to the efforts of the March of Dimes more and more babies are getting a shot at a healthy life every year.

On May 16th, 2009 I will be walking, along with my husband Adam and a team of our friends and family,  at Winchester’s March for Babies. Last year at this time I knew that the March of Dimes was a great organization, but I didn’t realize what a miracle it truly is to bring a healthy baby into the world. If I had the power to prevent all parents from ever having to know the pain of losing a baby, I would do it in a heartbeat. But I don’t, so instead I am doing what I can to help support those who may one day make my dream a reality.  “One day all babies will be born healthy”.

If you have been touched by the March of Dimes, or have been blessed with healthy babies and would like to make a donation to support my walk please visit www.marchforbabies.org/babyloganz.

Thanks for your support and for allowing me to share my story with you.

Welcome Baby Noah!

Newborn baby photography in Winchester Va

I photographed this cutie last week when he was 3 weeks old.  This little guy was amazing.  Newborn sessions usually require a great deal of patience, because the babies usually start crying for food every couple minutes.  But Noah was quiet the entire time!  The only issue we had with him was that he was awake for most of the session.  He was just so curious that it was almost impossible to get him to sleep, no matter what little tricks we tried.  I was amazed at how much of an angel he was the entire time.  Read all the way through this post to find out about a CRAZY special we’re having for April only!

I like how he’s looking up at his name in this one

I’ve never seen a newborn ride a stuffed animal before!  He was so good!

His daddy is being deployed soon, so we did this great series with his dad in uniform that I think is so beautiful.  Here’s a couple…

Okay, so he cried once… and I had to post it just because I think crying babies are so cute (as long as it doesn’t last too long!).  He did this for 15 seconds tops, and then he fell right to sleep :-)

See, I told you!  HAPPY EASTER!!!

You can see more super-cute pictures of Noah, along with lots of others by clicking here & joining my group page on Facebook!

(that’s where the special is too, so now you have to go…  I’m sneaky, I know!)

Exciting News for Me

Most everyone who follows my blog knows that I also have a full-time dayjob, and those of you who are friends of mine know that having a full-time dayjob and a 50+ hour a week business has been somewhat stressful on me over the past few years.  I have always had multiple jobs at once since I was at least 21, and at one point I actually had TWO full-time jobs, and three part-time jobs at the same time (this only lasted for 3 months when I realized that sleep deprivation could cause some serious mental side effects, lol!!!  So, I quit one of the full-time jobs, but still had the other 4 jobs).  My reasoning over the last couple years for keeping my dayjob was that I needed my health insurance.  To buy insurance on my own for Jon & I would cost at least $500 a month, and I just wasn’t pulling in that kind of income to justify the expense.

Well, two weeks ago I was a victim of the current economic crisis, and was laid off from my dayjob that I have grown so attached to.  Those first few hours after I left were filled with a rollercoaster of worries and thoughts, including a slight panic attack, and then I realized something….  I would be okay.  No matter what, I have Jon & two wonderful families that will always be there for me.  One big concern was the fact that we are trying to start a family, and that I would definitely have to pay for COBRA (which is $694 a month… Ouch!) so that we won’t have to deal with the account collectors for the local hospital (VICIOUS, let me tell you).  Luckily, the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act will take my COBRA payments down 65% for the next 9 months (a big HOORAY for the government!).  So, now would be the perfect time to try having only one job, while also helping Jon get his company off the ground (I’ll fill you in on that soon).  I have high hopes that this is going to work out, and I’m SO excited to see where we are a year from now.

So, long story short, I will FINALLY be getting my blog posts caught up that have been waiting out there for so long now!  All of these posts are from 2008, so they aren’t sneak peeks that you’d normally see on a blog, but more of “flashbacks”.  Hey, that’s what I’ll call them… Flashbacks :-)

Our Wedding ~ Chapter 1

I began writing this entry, and realized there was no way I would be able to divide our wedding into two blog posts.  It just isn’t gonna happen!  So, I’m breaking it up into several chapters… who knows how many it will take, but I just want to give brides out there some ideas and helpful hints along the way.  And since I no longer have a day job to take up my time, I’ll be able to devote much more time to my blog… YAY!!!   I’ve even made a category just for this, so you can always click on the “Our Wedding” category at the top of the page to see only those posts about our wedding.

Let’s start with the invitation!  I knew I didn’t want the traditional invitation for a few reasons… first & foremost, that’s just not our style.  Second, your invitation should give your guests a feel of how your wedding is going to be.  So, since we were set on a whimsical, non-formal wedding, we didn’t want to use formal invitations.  Lastly, I just couldn’t imagine sending out any type of communication to our guests without our picture on it!

I designed a 4 sided card that had some of the beautiful engagement images that Shelby Leigh had taken of us.  I used my pro lab for the printing, and selected a fine linen paper for a natural feel. Here’s the front:

When you opened up the inside, you still got a little feel of that “wedding invitation” style, just without the formality of traditional invites.

The back was just filled with more images from our engagement session.

If you look closely, you can see we had our web address on the invite, and encouraged everyone to RSVP online.  We were trying to be a little more green by not printing a separate directions card, since all that info was on the web site, but we underestimated how many older guests that we had that did not have internet access, so we ended up sending a follow up directions postcard, with yet another photo of us (this one was taken by the ever-so-talented Dustin Izatt from Utah while we were in Vegas last year).  This was the front:

And the back:

It actually worked out quite well, and I’m glad we did it that way.  I think that it kept our wedding date on people’s minds, and we had close to 80% of people who were invited actually attend, which is phenomenal in the wedding world.  Of course, we only invited a little over 100 people, so it was still a small gathering.

Overall, I wouldn’t have changed a thing about the invitations.  Wait… yes I would have… if I had to do it over again, I would have forced myself to start a little sooner, so that invitations could have been sent out 8 weeks in advance.  We were just SOOOOO insanely busy last year with everyone else’s weddings, that we actually only spent a few hours of solid planning on our own (sounds impossible, I know, but it’s unfortunately so true).  I definitely couldn’t have pulled it all together without Jon’s tremendous help :)
