Since I have been reposting some of the blog posts that were eaten in the blog hack last year, I had to repost one of my favorite senior sessions to date of Courtney! She was a natural in front of the camera, and we had so much fun hanging around downtown Martinsburg for her first session. She actually had 3! One in downtown Martinsburg, one in the Shepherdstown area and her drape shot for the yearbook (SO much more gorgeous than the school photographer’s drab choices!). First, our downtown session…

We ended the shoot on the river at 49 degrees (December, mind you…) for pictures of her in her homecoming dress, sash and crown from being Homecoming Queen! I was excited that she wanted to do this, but man oh man was it freaking COLD out there! I had her mom take a shot of me in the freezing water… anything to get that shot… and what a shot it was!martinsburg wv senior portrait photographers swadley studio

Here’s the Instagram of the shot her mom got of me trying to get hypothermia:)

psst… Go follow me!!!

I forgot about these that we took in the studio super-quick when she came by to pick an order up!

Here’s her beautiful drape shot for the yearbook. I love being able to give my seniors such a better portrait to showcase in their yearbook. You’ll be staring at that thing at each reunion (trust me, I just had another reunion, and I drew over my picture because I hated it so much, lol! So embarrassing!).

Bright Box Theater Winchester VA wedding venue by swadley studio

The Bright Box Theater in Winchester, VA is a modern wedding couples’ dream come true. When I first heard that there was going to be a new performing arts venue opening in downtown Winchester hosting live music as well as private events such as weddings I was very hopeful that it would be everything I have wanted in a modern wedding venue. Before it opened I was invited to take a tour of the building and photograph the unique details of the space. I have to say as soon as I walked in I was in love! The owners had spared no expense to make their venue beyond amazing. Marilyn Finnemore had wanted to create a space much like the black box style theaters where you can convert the space into multiple setups depending on the needs of the event. She also hired a nationally known sound designer to create a top-notch sound system, and the end result is nothing short of perfection. They definitely succeeded in this endeavor and I am so excited that our area now has a classy, modern wedding venue that will appeal to more contemporary couples. The top floor could actually appeal to history buffs as well, since the original tin ceiling tiles from the early 20th century department store and the original escalator is still in place. Not to mention the great view of Old Town Winchester’s historic courthouse. So classy!

As happy as I was to see the venue in person, it’s always interesting to see a new venue handle events such as weddings. Weddings are so much different than other events, and I have seen my share of new venues fail in creating a wonderful wedding day experience, because they don’t understand the nuances that go into making a wedding day flow. So I was really excited when one of my brides told me that her reception would be at the Bright Box Theater, so I could see them in action! I may have just started jumping up and down (but I’ll never admit to that, haha!). Her wedding day came and the ceremony went off without a hitch at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley as they always do there, and off to the reception at the Bright Box we went. The contemporary wedding decor looked amazing in the main theatre space of the Bright Box. Every staff member was professional and went above and beyond with their individual tasks. I heard so many guests comment on how unique and classy this reception was, and how they had never experienced something quite like it. Now the food… OH MY GOODNESS, the food! Well we didn’t get to actually eat the food (boo!), but it looked like it was straight out of a magazine! It was obvious that everyone loved the food with the conversations we overheard. You can check out the blog post of this wedding here! I was so impressed with every aspect of the wedding reception held here, and will continue to recommend this venue to anyone getting married in the area who wants something different from what all their friends had. Enjoy the images of the Bright Box Theater, along with a few from the wedding we shot there!

*You may have seen this before when it was first posted in 2013. The blog hack we experienced last year ate this post along with many others, so I will periodically be reposting them for those of you who did not get to see them the first time*

A wedding at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley is always a delight to photograph, but when Allison told me she was having her wedding reception at the Bright Box Theater in downtown Winchester I knew this would be extra special! I had visited the Bright Box previously to photograph some of the spaces that were available, and I was so excited to see how a wedding would come together there (Be sure to check out the Vendor Spotlight I did here!). It was an elegant affair with a modern flair, and Jon & I enjoyed every moment of this beautiful wedding.

Adam & Anna’s wedding was amazing to photograph! Situated on the most charming, private estate in Boyce, VA, the wedding day may have been gloomy to start, but the skies opened up to a phenomenal sunset to give Adam & Anna the perfect start to their life together. Words don’t do justice for the gorgeousness going on in this wedding, so I’ll let the photography speak for itself!

VENDORS
Wedding Planner: A Trendy Wedding – Washington, DC
Dress: Soliloquy Bridal Couture Herndon, VA (The seamstress here rebuilt the back of Anna’s dress, and made it absolutely stunning!)
Florals: Tourterelle Floral Design Charlottesville, VA
Catering: Purple Onion Catering Company – Vienna, VA
Entertainment/DJ: – DJ David Jefferies/Horizon Entertainment Washington, D.C.
Photography: Swadley Studio Martinsburg, WV
martinsburg wv wedding photographersOh, the florals in this wedding… they were DIVINE!!! And I’m not usually the “pretty, soft flower” type of person, as I usually go for the more eclectic look, but these were some of the most gorgeous wedding florals I’ve ever seen! Kudos to Tourterelle Floral Design for converting me to the other side, haha!

martinsburg wv wedding photographersUsually, photographers get upset when someone so much as leans into the aisle to ruin our shot, but this cute little guy is welcome anytime! I especially love the shot of him being pulled back out of the way. It’s the little things:)
martinsburg wv wedding photographersOn that note, though, I have to give major props to Adam & Anna for holding their kiss for awhile so that we could get a decent shot without too many electronic devices in the shot (I know that’s not WHY they held it, of course!). Future couples take note! If you aren’t going for an unplugged wedding ceremony, hold that kiss as long as you can!
martinsburg wv wedding photographersEven though Adam is blocked in this one, I still love this one for the excitement on Anna’s face:)

martinsburg wv wedding photographersAnna sent me a Pinterest board of images she liked, and it didn’t include one wedding photograph in it. Instead, it was full of beautiful images of dilapidated buildings and overgrown structures. So, we went down to the barn to find some beauty in the buildings.

martinsburg wv wedding photographersDuring dinner hour, Anna took a break with the wedding planner away from the excitement of the reception. I ran to get another camera battery from our backup stash (for some reason, one of my camera’s batteries overheated and stopped working, so luckily I had backup in the car). On my way back, I noticed the sun was setting making the most beautiful surreal hues blanket the entire area. I pulled Anna away for just a moment and told her to enjoy the moment and twirl in her dress. I know many brides out there have twirled in dresses as a little girl imagining their wedding day. This was her chance to revel in that moment:)Dreamy, right???
martinsburg wv wedding photographersAnd, while we couldn’t see the sunset from the hillside we were on, we were able to catch a gorgeous view of the skies against the reception tent. I have to say 2015 was the year for gorgeous wedding day sunsets!

Here’s Purple Onion Catering Company again blowing me away with a fabulous dessert bar! I really wish we would have indulged in that!

martinsburg wv wedding photographersAt one of her planning meetings, I remember talk of the milk and cookies bar at the end of the night. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but I do recall Anna insisting that she have it no matter what. When I saw it set up before the end of the night, I totally understood the necessity of this addition to her wedding reception. With cold, fresh bottled milk and gourmet cookies from Ted’s Bulletin, this may have been my favorite personal touch to a wedding this year!

Thank you to Anna and her wonderful family for hosting such a remarkable event, and to Natalie with A Trendy Wedding in Washington, D.C. for making it all happen!

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and I will be holding the annual Beau Boudoir sessions next Saturday, January 16! Here’s a little video of a recent magazine I made for one of our brides as a wedding gift to her wife. From what I hear, it was a big hit on the wedding night!
